Timeline of Bank Bag Styles & FDIC Markings
1800s – Early 1900s: Pre-Regulation Banking (c. 1850 – 1915)
Features:
- Heavy canvas or leather construction, stitched by hand or early machine.
- Drawstring or buckle-top closures; no standard locks.
- No federal identifiers, banks were privately chartered and unregulated by federal insurance.
- Printing: simple stencils reading “First National Bank,” “Merchants Bank,” etc.
FDIC Context:
The FDIC did not exist. Any markings like “National Bank” only meant the bank held a federal charter under the Comptroller of the Currency, not deposit insurance.
Dating Tip:
If a bag lacks any “FDIC” or “Member of Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation” text, and lettering is purely institutional, it likely predates 1934.
1920s – Early 1930s: Pre-FDIC Industrial Era
Features:
- Machine-stitched canvas bags with metal grommets.
- Red, black, or green single-color lettering.
- Some began using stock phrases like “Safe Banking Service” or “Trust & Savings.”
FDIC Context:
Still pre-FDIC. Many small banks failed during the Depression; bags from this era rarely survived because institutions merged or closed.
Dating Tip:
If a bag reads “Member Federal Reserve System” but not FDIC, it’s 1930–1933 transitional.
1934 – 1950s: FDIC Becomes Law & Standard Marking Appears
Historical Note:
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was established June 1933, operational Jan 1 1934, guaranteeing deposits up to $5,000. Banks immediately began printing FDIC membership on marketing materials, including deposit bags.
Features:
- Canvas or cotton duck with grommets and drawstring.
- Standard stencil or screen text added: “Member Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation”
or abbreviated “Member F.D.I.C.” - FDIC lettering often appeared beneath the bank name or on the reverse side.
- Red or maroon block font typical; black lettering less common.
Dating Clues:
- FDIC mention → post-1934.
- No ZIP code → pre-1963.
- Canvas + grommets → pre-1958–60.
- Thus, FDIC + canvas drawstring = roughly 1935–1955.
1960s – 1970s: Modernization & ZIP Codes
Features:
- Switch to vinyl, nylon, or coated canvas.
- Zippers replace drawstrings (mid-1950s onward).
- ZIP codes introduced in 1963 and began appearing on bags soon after.
- FDIC markings remained but grew smaller, often a single line under the logo.
FDIC Context:
Deposit limits increased (to $15,000 in 1966, $20,000 in 1969). Banks modernized branding; “Member FDIC” became a regulated disclosure under federal advertising law.
Dating Tip:
- “Member FDIC” + ZIP code → mid-1960s or newer.
- Two-color silk-screen logos with stylized fonts → 1970s.
1980s – Present: Security & Branding Era
Features:
- Nylon, ballistic fabric, or plastic; zipper locks, barcodes, or tamper seals.
- Multicolor screen printing, sometimes with FDIC logo boxes or regulatory fine print.
- Some show FDIC + Equal Housing Lender (added after 1975).
Dating Tip:
- Any bag showing “FDIC, Equal Housing Lender” or barcodes → post-1975.
- Absence of “FDIC” on modern materials often means non-deposit promotional bag, not bank-issued.

Collector Tip
If you see FDIC wording without a ZIP code and the bag is canvas or cotton with grommets, you’re likely looking at a WWII-to-early-1950s piece. The golden age of small-town American banking.
